The History of Sauna Use
The history of sauna bathing is as old as humanity itself. While the exact origin remains somewhat shrouded in steam, we know that the first forms of sauna appeared around the 5th century BC. Archaeologists have found evidence that Asian tribes were already building simple steam baths directly in their dwellings – in tents.
They created them by bringing heated stones from the fire pit into the center and pouring water over them. Around these stones, they would rest, warm their bodies, and believed that by doing so, they were strengthening their resistance to diseases. Even then, people understood that heat and steam could have beneficial effects on health and psyche.
Smoke sauna – first written mentions and interesting facts
The first written mentions of sauna bathing date back to the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. At that time, people used so-called smoke saunas. These were characterized by heating directly in the room without a chimney – the smoke from the fire first spread throughout the room, and only when the stones had sufficiently radiated heat did people extinguish the fire, ventilate the smoke, and begin to sauna.
The walls of the saunas were black from soot, but paradoxically, it was one of the most sterile environments of its time. Women even gave birth here. Heating the stones, however, could take as long as eight hours, so preparing the sauna was truly demanding – yet people used it regularly.
Sauna bathing among the Slavs – our history also smells of wood
Sauna bathing has a long tradition here as well. Already in the 10th century, the famous traveler Ibrahím Ibn Jákúb described saunas used by the Slavs. In his manuscripts, he depicted wooden structures with beams filled with moss, a stove in the corner, and a hole in the ceiling through which the smoke escaped.
People in these simple structures poured water over heated stones and allowed their bodies to warm up. It was not just about relaxation – they believed that sauna bathing helped treat skin problems, strengthened immunity, and generally contributed to the body's resilience.
Finland – the cradle of the modern sauna
Today, Finland is considered the true cradle of sauna bathing. It is here that saunas became a common part of people's lives, regardless of their social status. In both cities and villages, each community had its public sauna, which served not only for cleansing and relaxation but also as a place for gathering and sharing.
While today people meet in cafes or pubs, in Finland, the sauna was the true social center. Sauna bathing had a deep cultural significance and was a common part of everyday life.
From smoke to comfort – the development of the sauna to the present day
At the beginning of the 19th century, people began building saunas that resembled today's versions. However, it still took a long time to heat them. It was only after World War II that a fundamental change occurred – traditional stoves were replaced by modern heating systems. As a result, today a sauna can be heated in about 90 minutes, allowing you to enjoy comfort without a long wait.
Today, you have several types of saunas to choose from – from the classic Finnish sauna to bio saunas and infrared saunas. Each has different effects and experiences, but they all share one thing in common – natural care for health, well-being, and vitality.
